The regulatory compliance is a core aspect of Shelys Pharmaceuticals’ operations. Shelys Pharmaceuticals maintains a legal register which is updated quarterly to ensure adherence to all relevant regulations. Our dedicated legal unit keeps the company informed of any legal changes. Additionally, we conduct legal audits to assess compliance levels and implement corrective measures when necessary

One of Shelys Pharmaceuticals’ part of business continuity strategy is to proactively identify potential emergency situations and implement comprehensive response plans. Shelys Pharmaceuticals has established clear procedures for handling emergencies and regularly tests these protocols to ensure optimal preparedness. All employees receive thorough training on the necessary steps to take during a crisis. To enhance emergency readiness, Shelys Pharmaceuticals has also implemented a fire safety policy as a key preventive measure

Shelys Pharmaceuticals has undertaken a comprehensive Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment and kept in place mitigation measures for the identified risks.
This has been done to proactively to prevent incidents at the workplace. All incidents are investigated and corrective actions proposed and implemented to prevent reoccurrence.
Key performance indicators are in place to measure EHS performance in terms of accident rates. The company aims at having minimum cases of accidents in line with its EHS policy.

A structured waste management system is in place, with ongoing improvements to waste handling procedures.
In compliance with Tanzania Medicines & Medical Devices Authority(TMDA), Laws Tanzania, all pharmaceutical waste must be managed responsibly due to the security risks associated with pharmaceutical products. Additionally, hazardous waste is handled in accordance with the Environment Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) and the Waste Regulations.
Waste is segregated, recorded, and securely stored before disposal. All waste is transported and disposed of by NEMA-approved waste handlers. Recycling and reuse initiatives have been implemented for non-hazardous waste.
The central waste yard at Shelys is designed to enhance efficiency and ensure compliance with Waste Management Regulations and Aspen’s waste management standards

Air quality measurements are done on an annual basis to ensure that what is emitted is within required regulatory requirements. Exhaust emissions from the boiler, generator and industrial trucks are measured to ensure that emissions levels are within specified regulatory limits as provided under EMCA-Air Quality Regulations, 2015. Measurements are done for particulate and VOCs in the work stations to ensure personnel are working in a conducive environment as per the requirements under Occupational Health and Safety Act-Hazardous Substance Rules and WHO guidelines.

Shelys Pharmaceuticals recognizes water as a limited and invaluable resource. That’s why we continuously implement measures to conserve it. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we develop Environmental Management Programs with specific water conservation targets, integrated into our annual objectives.

To ensure responsible water management, we treat all process wastewater before discharge, adhering to the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) Water Regulations of 2006. Our state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility has the capacity to purify water to meet the required quality standards, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines and environmental responsibility.

The company compiles its energy consumption for use in calculating its carbon emission equivalent.
There are measures put in place to reduce carbon emissions as part of the company’s Annual Environmental Management Programmes.

Eco-balance is a key issue in the current discussions and in saving our planet. Depletion of fossil fuels CO2 emissions and global warming are a threat to our ecologic and economic balance. Our company aims to contribute to ensuring eco-balance by taking initiatives towards energy saving and low carbon emissions. Environmental management protocols are being developed in accordance with ISO 14001 to enable the company to participate in Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) in a near future.
